On Friday, April 7, 2023, Blaine County Sheriff’s deputies had multiple interactions with a father and son that eventually led to felony charges for both. Deputies were called to a mid-valley residence for a report of a battery at approximately 1:15 a.m.
Upon investigation, it was determined that a verbal argument between friends had turned into a physical altercation, but the suspects were no longer at the residence. Deputies quickly located the vehicle from the 911 description and arrested Denton W. Coetzee for Driving Under the Influence, I.C. 18-8004.
Deputies were called back to the residence the following morning at 10:30 a.m. for a report that the suspects had allegedly left the residence with firearms and wristwatches belonging to the victim.
At approximately 2:20 p.m., BCSO deputies and Hailey Police Officers responded to the Hailey airport where the suspects had been located. Upon further investigation, Denton Worth Coetzee, age 63 of Coos Bay, OR, and Ian David Coetzee, age 23 of Felton, CA, were both arrested, and each charged with one count of felony Aggravated Battery, I.C. 18-907, one count of felony Grand Theft - Possession of Stolen Property, I.C. I.C. 18-2403, and one count of misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance – Marijuana Less Than Three Ounces, I.C. 37-2732(C)(3).
Denton and Ian Coetzee remain in the custody of the Blaine County Detention Center pending arraignment in Magistrate Court Monday afternoon.
